The 5 Rules of Factory-Ready Artwork
1. Always provide Vector (AI, EPS, or PDF): Vectors scale to billboard size without losing crispness. Never send a JPG or PNG for a vector logo.
2. 300 PPI applies at actual print scale: A 30cm chest graphic requires ~3,540 pixels wide. A 500px image will look jagged.
3. Outline all fonts: Convert live text into vector curves (Illustrator: Ctrl+Shift+O) so missing fonts don't corrupt your typography.
4. Remove the white box: Provide transparent backgrounds for DTF and screen printing on colored shirts.
5. Specify Pantone PMS C: Monitors display bright RGB light; specify exact physical ink formulas for corporate brand compliance.
1. Vector vs. Raster: The Mathematical Difference
The single most common bottleneck in apparel production is receiving a raster JPG or PNG file for a company logo. To understand why printers insist on vector files, consider how the two file types store graphical data:
Vector Graphics (.AI, .EPS, .PDF)
Resolution IndependentVector artwork does not contain pixels. Instead, it is composed of mathematical formulas describing points, Bรฉzier lines, and curves.
- check_circle Infinite Scaling: A 2cm logo scales to a 30cm back print with zero loss in sharpness.
- check_circle Color Separation Ready: Screen printing software can cleanly isolate each ink color.
- check_circle Crisp Edges: Plotters, laser cutters, and DTF RIP engines render microscopic lines perfectly.
Raster Images (.PNG, .JPG, .TIFF)
Fixed Grid of PixelsRaster images consist of a rigid grid of colored squares (pixels). When magnified beyond their native size, the pixels stretch.
- close Pixelation upon Enlarging: Curves turn into jagged stair-stepped blocks.
- close Color Blending Artifacts: JPEG compression creates dirty gray halos around logos.
- close Impossible to Screen-Separate: Cannot cleanly burn onto screen printing mesh.
2. The 300 DPI Reality: Calculating True Pixel Dimensions
A graphic designer might open Photoshop, change the resolution metadata setting from 72 to 300 DPI, and assume the file is print-ready. This is a critical misunderstanding. Merely changing metadata without increasing pixel count simply resizes the image to postage-stamp size.
| Print Placement | Metric Size | Inches | Minimum Pixel Dimensions at 300 PPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left Chest Logo | 9 cm wide | 3.54 in | 1,062 ร 1,062 px |
| Full Centre Chest | 26 cm wide | 10.23 in | 3,070 ร 3,070 px |
| Large Back Print โ | 30 cm wide | 11.81 in | 3,543 ร 3,543 px |
| Sleeve Logo | 8 cm wide | 3.15 in | 945 ร 945 px |
3. CMYK vs. RGB vs. Pantone PMS: Fabric Color Chemistry
Computer monitors, iPads, and iPhones emit vivid light across the RGB color gamut. Electric neon greens, ultra-bright cyan blues, and fluorescent purples look stunning on OLED screens. However, physical textile inks absorb and reflect ambient light, operating within the significantly narrower CMYK and spot-color gamut.
Used for website mockups, Canva, and social media. If sent directly to a printer without color profiling, vibrant electric blues will turn into dull muddy navies.
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black inks blended to create photographic full-color images. Standard for DTF and paper printing. Has a narrower gamut than RGB.
Pre-mixed ink recipes (e.g. Pantone 186 C Red). The factory technician weighs precise grams of pigment to match the official global standard on cotton.
4. Why You Must Convert Text to Outlines (Ctrl + Shift + O)
If your artwork contains live, editable typography using custom corporate fonts (such as Gotham, Avenir, or custom Arabic calligraphy), the printer's RIP workstation cannot render the text unless that exact font license is installed. If missing, the software automatically substitutes a generic fallback font (like Arial or Courier), destroying your company's branding.
Never destroy your editable master file! Always maintain two versions of your design:
CompanyLogo_MASTER_Editable.aiโ Keeps text live so you can fix typos or change dates next year.CompanyLogo_PRODUCTION_Outlined.pdfโ Select all text, click Type > Create Outlines in Illustrator, and save as PDF. Characters become permanent vector polygons that cannot corrupt.
5. Transparency & The White Underbase Problem
A frequent nightmare in custom apparel is receiving a logo saved as a standard JPEG where the designer didn't remove the white rectangular canvas. If printed on a black or navy T-shirt, the printer prints an ugly solid white rectangle with the logo stuck in the middle!
For Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers and digital printing, save files as 300 PPI PNG with transparent alpha background. The fabric color will show naturally through the negative spaces.
Printing bright yellow or red on a dark black cotton shirt requires a preliminary flashed white underbase plate. Without it, the dark dye of the shirt absorbs the color, leaving a faded, dull muddy graphic.
6. Artwork Rules by Decoration Method: Screen vs. DTF vs. Embroidery
Silkscreen Printing: Spot Colors & Stroke Weights
Requires solid vector paths separated by color layers. Minimum positive line weight is 0.5 pt; minimum negative reverse space is 0.75 pt to prevent ink flooding.
Direct-to-Film (DTF): Edge Feathering & Semitransparency
DTF relies on white adhesive hot-melt powder applied to wet ink. Avoid soft feathering or 20% transparent drop shadows, as the white powder cannot adhere to faint translucent pixels, causing jagged white halos.
Embroidery: Digitization & Lettering Limits
An .AI vector file cannot be directly sent to an embroidery machine. It must be digitized into stitch data (.DST or .EMB) with defined pull compensation. Minimum text height is 5.0 mm for legible thread stitching.
7. Industry Standard Print Placements & Dimensions
Never tell a factory "print my logo in normal size." Always specify dimensions in exact centimeters or millimeters. Here are the UAE industry reference specs:
